Explore the technique of combining oil paint with cold wax medium to create abstracted paintings using an intuitive process. Unlike encaustic, cold wax is used at room temperature without heat to extend the oil paint and serve as a medium. Non-traditional tools will be used for applying the paint, for mark-making and creating texture. Incorporate other media such as marble dust, charcoal, graphite and pigments. Through an additive and subtractive process, you will create layers rich in surface and subsurface texture, translucency and depth.
This workshop emphasizes the process and is experimental in nature. Compositional layouts and design principles will be addressed as you learn from exercises, demonstrations, instructional guidance, and individual exploration of the techniques and materials. Positive individual and group critiques will be offered. Experimentation and personal expression is encouraged.
